Job Summary

The Buildings and Thermal Systems (BTS) Center in the Mechanical and Thermal Systems Engineering (MTSE) Directorate at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory seeks an experienced scientist or engineer with expertise in materials for heat transfer and insulation applications with specific interest in building technologies and systems.

The ideal candidate will hold a doctoral degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or engineering and have a demonstrated track record of successfully obtaining funding for research related to the thermal performance of new materials, especially for improved building energy efficiency. While this position will be in the BTS Center at NREL, it is expected that the successful candidate will work in a cross-functional manner with researchers within the MTSE Directorate and with other areas of the laboratory to forward NREL’s research programs in thermal materials.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in the development of new materials including design, synthesis and demonstration of new materials performance. Initial areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the development of novel materials for thermal insulation by taking advantage of nano-scale heat transfer phenomena. In addition to materials design and testing, the successful candidate will collaborate with other staff to augment NREL’s thermal materials and systems measurement and characterization capabilities.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Applies extensive scientific technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource.
Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
